Fostering Brilliance

We must remember. This Saturday, we commemorate the immense tragedy of the Holocaust and the millions of lives lost to hatred during this dark period in our world history.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27 marks the anniversary of the liberation in 1945 of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp by Soviet troops. Over a million Jewish people lost their lives there, the largest number of all the Nazi camps, where in total six million Jewish people died along with millions of others. The hatred was perpetuated against Jewish people and many other groups targeted by the Nazi regime – people living with disabilities, Black people, members of the LGBTQ2SI+ community, Roma and Sinti peoples, political dissidents and others.

As we mark this day, it is our responsibility as educators to remember the depths to where discrimination and hatred can lead, and to redouble our efforts to instill curricular and cultural initiatives and practices within UTS that promote civil discourse, mutual understanding and respect.

Antisemitism, and racism in all its forms, discrimination, injustice and hatred have no place in our school. In our halls outside the Canada and World Studies classrooms, students can view the Early Warning Signs of the Holocaust Poster Series. This week, as a community, we are reflecting on the significance of this occasion in a number of ways. Our M3 Canadian History classes are examining the roots of antisemitism in their Holocaust unit. Screens outside the main office will highlight the meaning of this day, and our library staff have compiled resources for our continued learning. On Friday, the UTS Social Justice Club will make a PA system announcement to all staff and students  highlighting the importance of this day and ways we as a community can educate ourselves about racism and injustice.

Together, we can build a better world based on love, kindness and caring for our collective humanity. We are all in this together. This is our resolute commitment and we will stand by it for the good of our students and our school.

UTS A-Z

In August, the following useful document was shared.

We acknowledge that some members of the community may have lost the link, so we wanted to re-share it here as well as in the Parent Portal.

Check out the UTS A-Z HERE.

Student Online Behaviour and Interactions

In our efforts to keep parents and guardians up to date and to support the partnership between families and the school in helping our students develop good online skills, we want all parents to be aware that there are a number of Instagram and other social media accounts that allow students to post anonymous comments.

One example is uts_shade_room (Instagram). Though this account is private, it has 250+ followers and 60 posts.

The account encourages students to share rumours daily through another site that allows the sharing of content anonymously.

We hope all parents/guardians will discuss this and other problematic accounts with their children and encourage them to unfollow them.
