Fostering Brilliance

The uplifting power of the arts

 On Saturday, the thunder of the UTS Bakudan Taiko group resounded on the world-class stage of Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall, first of a stellar repertoire at the Conference of Independent Schools Music Festival (CiSMF). It was fitting they played the piece, ZOKU, which translates to family or group, composed by Leonard Eto, because they are very much like a family, playing in synchronicity to create a truly moving performance.

Along with our Taiko drummers, UTS Music Teacher Dr. Jeff MacLeod, also conducted the Festival Jazz Band, made up of top student jazz musicians from CIS schools, in an exceedingly cool rendition of O.W., an arrangement by Mary Lou Williams, edited by Rob DuBoff and Jeffrey Sultanof.

As enthralling music filled the expansive hall, I had the sense that this is what education is all about.

April Report Cards

April report cards will be released next week in the Parent Portal. You will receive a message in your inbox when they are ready, with instructions, similar to those you received in December. 

We are projecting that reports will be ready by April 25.


Final Exam Schedule

Final exams for all students taking credit courses (F2 to S6) will take place between June 10 and June 17. Final exams count towards the 30 per cent Summative Mark.

Here is the schedule for 2024 Final Exams.

The only reason a student may miss an exam is for illness and the student will need a doctor’s note to be excused from the exam. 

Vacations or other activities are not acceptable reasons to miss exams.

S5 Postsecondary Planning Meetings
Deadline: April 19

S5 students were asked to set up a meeting to discuss their postsecondary plans with their counsellor and parents. These online meetings will take place between now and mid-May during a student’s spare period in the school day. The deadline to sign up is tomorrow, April 19, so please remind your teen to sign up if they haven’t already done so.


UTS Parents’ Association 2024-25 Nominations Open
Deadline: April 22

We are inviting all those interested in joining the UTSPA Executive Committee for the 2024-25 school year to submit an expression of interest using this form. The deadline for submitting your expression of interest is Monday, April 22, 2024. We appreciate your interest in joining the UTSPA Executive Committee. The new slate of executive members will be voted in at the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, May 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room. Thanks to all who are interested in becoming UTSPA members!


Indigenous Book Fair and Artisan Market
April 25

On Thursday April 25, UTS is hosting an Indigenous Book Fair and Artisan Market.

The book fair will be open to students starting at lunch.

Parents are invited to come in and shop after school between 3:45 to 5 p.m.

The Indigenous bookseller GoodMinds and local Indigenous artisans will be set up in the Atrium and Multi-Purpose Room, selling items from beadwork and moccasins to sauces and preserves.

We hope you will come and support this event.


Parent/Guardian Meeting for M3 Parents
April 25

There will be an information meeting for parents and guardians of M3 students for the upcoming Ottawa trip. 

It is scheduled for April 25 at 6 p.m. on Zoom (link). 

The meeting will be recorded for those who are unable to attend. If your M3 student is not attending the trip, you do not need to attend the meeting.

F1 Vaccination Clinic
May 30

Toronto Public Health will be returning to UTS on May 30 to complete the vaccination series for Hepatitis B and HPV vaccinations. In order to be considered complete, another injection is required for both Hepatitis B and HPV six months after the initial doses (for a total of two doses each). Meningococcal vaccination requires only one dose. Nothing is required from your end at present.

If your child missed the first round of vaccinations in December 2023, and you would like them to start their series at UTS, please complete this consent form. Completed consent forms can be returned to the Main Office. 

If you are unsure which vaccines your child has received to date, you can use this portal. You will require your child’s Health Card information. If the portal is not working, email immunization@toronto.ca to request the vaccination records directly.

Close the Gap!

You should have  received your spring appeal in your mailbox recently. Please help close the gap by making your donation today - to make sure all UTS students who face barriers to a UTS education are supported for the 2024-25 school year. All donations will count towards UTS Together parent giving days, scheduled from May 6 to 10! 


First Aid Certification Opportunity
July 2 to 3

For students currently in M3 and above, School Nurse Adi Sood will be running a reduced cost ($75) Standard First Aid and CPR/AED C class. 

Taking place July 2 and 3 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., students will learn the skills to deal with a variety of health emergencies, as well as how to properly perform CPR and use an AED. 

Upon successful completion, students will receive their Red Cross Certification.
