Fostering Brilliance

I’ve long been a fan of Brené Brown. She has an uncanny ability to find just the right words to express what many of us feel. As I reflected on my arrival at UTS in August, my efforts to understand our school’s unique history, my excitement at working alongside remarkable students and staff, and my desire to support belonging for every member of our community, it didn’t surprise me to once again find wisdom in Dr. Brown.

She writes, “Empathy has no script. There is no right way or wrong way to do it. It’s simply listening, holding space, withholding judgement, emotionally connecting, and communicating that incredibly healing message of ‘you are not alone.’”

On Tuesday night we held an evening for parents and guardians to share their hopes and concerns with me and with one another. I am immensely grateful to be part of a community that can come together in the service of our children and our school. Such conversations are not easy but they are essential to fostering mutual understanding and clarity. Read more

Self-nomination does not guarantee an award, however all self-nominations are seriously considered, balancing a number of factors relevant to the award. Once the nomination period closes, a UTS Awards committee comprised of UTS staff makes all final decisions before award ceremonies in the fall. The UTS committee bases final decisions on the merits of the nominations and the criteria of each award.

UTS Summer Camp Spotlight: Changemakers

Is your student trying to influence the world, but doesn’t know how?  Or maybe they’re concerned about a specific social issue, but don’t know where to start? Changemakers is our summer camp that teaches participants about how they can use their voice and influence to effect change on a local and global scale.

Or perhaps your student’s interest runs more to finance and industry disruption?  Developed at the Rotman School of Business and now our partner as an educational non-profit, Integrative Thinking is a problem-solving strategy that aims to help businesses meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Please email camps@utschools.ca for more information.

Ontario University Offer Deadlines
June 3

Ontario universities have until May 29 to release admission decisions to students. All students must confirm their replies on OUAC no later than June 3 or all offers of admission will be revoked. Students should respond promptly to any emails they receive from their counsellor, particularly in the lead up to this important deadline. S6 students were asked to update their university responses and destinations in Naviance, and with their counsellor. Families, we would appreciate your help in reminding them to do so.

Speaker for Parents and Guardians on Videogames June 4
