Fostering Brilliance

Last Saturday, I attended a research conference and had the privilege of hearing Dr. Tracey Vaillancourt of the University of Ottawa present on adolescent mental health post-pandemic. Dr. Vaillancourt holds a Canada Research Chair in school-based mental health, and the data she presented on the state of adolescent mental health across Ontario was difficult but important to hear.

Student Punctuality

Over the course of the year, the number of students who are late is increasing. We thank you for your cooperation and support in ensuring your children arrive at least 10 minutes before the start of school, leaving time for unexpected delays (e.g. traffic or subway disruption).

End-of-Term Work and Beginning of Summative Work

For students in F2 to S6 taking credit courses, Friday, May 10 is the last day for evaluations that will contribute to their term work evaluation, which is worth 70% of the total grade as described in the course outlines. May 10 to 17 is a bridging week where students will start their in-class preparation for summative projects and work.

The other 30% of the grade comes from summative work. The components that constitute the summative grade differ among courses; some courses have exams, others will have only summative work due before exams start or a combination of the two. Students receive a summary of the summative tasks in each course, so they know what is expected. Summative assessment submissions and evaluated work during classes will occur from May 20 to June 7. Exams take place from June 10 to 17.

The 30% summative grade does not apply to non-credit courses in F1 and F2 and work and evaluation in those courses will continue as it has throughout the year.

Speaker for Parents and Guardians June 4

UTSPA’s Wellness Committee invites you to join a much anticipated virtual session on Tuesday, June 4 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.  Video gaming continues to merge into the lives of families at UTS. While gaming can offer great opportunities for fun, education and connection, it can also bring about problems. Sometimes these problems can leave families feeling disconnected, blamed and helpless. Through a one-hour, online workshop, Dale Andersen-Giberson MSW, RSW will offer a number of responses to video-gaming difficulties that he has encountered in his practice.

Final Exam Schedule F2 to S6
June 10 to June 17

Final Exams for all students taking credit courses (F2 to S6)  will occur between June 10 and June 17. Final exams count towards the 30% summative mark for all credit courses. Here is the schedule for 2024 Final Exams. The only reason a student may miss an exam is for illness and in the case of illness, the student will need a doctor’s note acknowledging they were unable to write the exam due to illness, and need to write the exam later. All exams must be completed for the student to obtain their credit. Vacations or other activities are not viable reasons to write exams late (or early). Please contact academics@utschools.ca if you have questions.
