Supporting Your Children

As a follow-up to the difficult news that was shared with the UTS community yesterday, we would like to offer a resource from the Child Mind Institute on how to support children in coping with difficult events.

Parents and caregivers support their children through a number of differing experiences; readiness to talk about them varies for all. The types of support wanted by teens varies as well.

Be open and listen. Take the time to let your child express what they are feeling and thinking without trying to correct or solve.

Be honest but avoid creating a more traumatic experience. Share honestly with your teens, but avoid graphically describing scenarios. Try to stay factual and reassuring.

Create safety and connection. Your children will look to your response, and the security of their connection to you, to regulate themselves. Take extra time to be with them. Let them feel safe and secure with you

If you have any questions, please contact School Social Workers Marleen, Steph and Joelle.
