Fostering Brilliance

At UTS, we’ve celebrated Black History Month as Black Futures Month since 2022, which was an intentional decision made by students on the UTS Black Equity Committee to make the month more future-focused and forward-thinking. In doing so, we highlight our school’s commitment to understand and acknowledge the injustices of the past and the present while celebrating the contributions made by Black people and cultures to the development of Canada. The future is where we have the opportunity to make the most difference…

Measles Update

With March break fast approaching, many families may have vacation plans. Due to travel and the potential of people missing their measles vaccinations during the pandemic, measles is on the rise.

Measles is a very contagious viral infection and the virus can spread easily to others through the air when they come in contact with droplets of an infected person or the air when an infected person has breathed, coughed or sneezed. Symptoms include a red rash, fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and feeling tired. Click here for more information.

All individuals should consider getting vaccinated before they travel especially if they are not up-to-date or have never had a measles infection. The vaccination is available at your local doctors office or a public health clinic for school-aged children. If you have questions, please contact Toronto Public Health at publichealth@toronto.ca or 416-338-7600 (TTY: 416-392-0658), Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Wellness Session for Parents and Guardians
Monday, March 4

As teenagers enter a new phase of life, parents enter a new phase of parenting. Adolescence is a time filled with excitement, exploration and identity development. Brains are changing rapidly, and won’t be fully developed for a few more years, meaning that although they may be more independent they are not just mini adults.

The UTS Social Work Team and UTSPA Wellness Committee would like to invite interested parents to join us for a virtual session on Monday, March 4, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. to discuss parenting in the teenage years.

We will be looking through your responses to this registration form for themes to address, and we hope parents bring some of what they have found helpful and enjoyed about parenting in the teenage years to share as well.

To get everyone’s thoughts flowing, here is an article from well known clinical psychologist Lisa Damour.

UTS Charity Week
March 5 to 8

Each year, the Student Outreach Coordinators (SOCs) and Student Ambassador Council (SAC) engage in a week of fundraising in support of a local charity. This year’s organization is Dashmaawaan Bemaadzinjin (They Feed the People), an Indigenous catering company using profits to support Indigenous seniors and unhoused folks.

There will be lunchtime fundraising events all week, from a mystery book shop to food sales! In addition, the SOC/SAC team is organizing a raffle and are seeking donations of goods and experiences.

Please drop off any donations at the main office of UTS (371 Bloor Street West), labelled for UCW, by March 1. If you would like your family to be recognized for the donation, please also label with your child’s name and grade, or leave it unlabelled to remain anonymous!

Raffle tickets will be sold to students at lunch from March 5 to 8, with the final draw on March 8. Be sure to send your student to school with cash in hand!

Nocturne Concert

This concert features some of the best young musicians in the city, playing music from a variety of composers and styles.

Call for Parent and Guardian Volunteers
April 10 and April 27

  • We are looking for 10 parent/guardian volunteers to support our Foundation Service Saturday on April 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • We are looking forward to throwing our 11th annual International Day of Pink on Wednesday, April 10! This event stands up and supports the 2SLGBTQI+ community and we couldn't have such an amazing block party without the support of our parents. We are looking for a minimum of 10 parent volunteers.

Please email Catherine Wachter at catherine.wachter@utschools.ca to get involved. Thank you!

Service Saturday for F1s and F2s
April 27 from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

On Saturday, April 27, F1s and F2s are asked to come to UTS to participate in our second Service Saturday of the year.  Students will be divided into groups of 20 and will be partnered with one of 10 organizations. They will participate in an empathy-building session followed by a pizza lunch and then will do community service for that organization, all in-house at UTS! The day runs from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and students receive four hours of community service. We look forward to supporting organizations such as: Sprint Senior Care, Camp Maple Leaf, Voice for Deaf Children, Ernestine's Women's Shelter, Toronto Wildlife Centre, Holland Bloorview and others!

Classroom Invitation to Artists and Designers

Are you working as a designer, artist, architect or in other creative roles? Are you interested in sharing some of your creative process and insights with UTS students? The Visual Arts department is interested in hosting UTS community members in our art classrooms and would appreciate your involvement. Are you able to:

  • Explore how you navigate the creative process in your work, sharing visual examples?

  • Discuss some of the challenges and rewards you’ve encountered in your work?

  • Examine your path (experience, school, career) and advise how students might reach a similar place one day?

If so, please take a few minutes to complete this form. There’s no commitment - just the start of a conversation.

Support the UTS Bursary Fund

You can help students pursue their UTS education!

It is projected that $2.3 million will be needed in bursary support for the 2024-25 school year.

While the annual bursary endowment proceeds will provide approximately $1.8 million in financial assistance, an additional $500,000 is needed to meet the needs of our students.

Your generosity and kindness can help provide students what they need to achieve their dreams and goals by removing financial barriers.

Your gift to UTS is critical to the success of UTS students.
