Fostering Brilliance

I feel incredibly full of gratitude to be part of the extraordinary UTS community. This week’s assembly for Asian Heritage Month, brought to us by the Advancing Equity for Asians Committee, was one of those moments that left me in thrall of the tremendous potential and talent of our students, and the diversity of the UTS experience. The Assembly was very moving, not just for the high calibre and vast range of the performances, but for the intensive collaboration on stage and behind the scenes. Our students and staff showed they know how to work together to make great things happen.

Course Change Requests

On Monday, May 27, students will receive an email with a link to a Google Form to request changes to their course selections made in January. Current course selections may be viewed in the Parent Portal.

The deadline to submit course change requests is Friday, June 7 at 4 p.m.

While the school makes every effort to accommodate change requests as long as any prerequisite requirements have been met, please be advised that the school is scheduled and staffed based on the January course requests and it may not be possible to accommodate every requested change. In some cases, course sections may be full, or there may be new timetable conflicts that can't be resolved. If a change is unable to be fulfilled, students and families will be contacted to discuss alternatives. Please contact your child’s guidance counsellor if you have any questions about the course changes your child is considering.

While there will be a second opportunity to request changes in late summer (Monday, August 19, 9 a.m. to Monday, August 26 at noon), that window is meant to respond to extenuating circumstances (e.g., change in academic goals as the result of a summer program). No new change requests will be accepted or processed between June 7 and August 19.

Reminder About Expectations During the Summative Period for Credit Courses

We are in the summative period (30% of course mark) for credit courses. If your child is ill for a summative evaluation please call the Main Office at 416-946-4012 to explain and be prepared to provide a doctor's note for the illness. If you have a family emergency, please call the Main Office at 416-946-4012 immediately to explain the situation. We work with families when these unforeseen situations occur. Absences for foreseeable reasons should be discussed at least two weeks in advance of the absence. Students must be present for all summative evaluations. Foreseeable absences that are not communicated to the school may compromise the summative evaluation.

Frankfurt Exchange Hosts

We are still looking for a small number of host families to support the exchange with Carl Schulz Schule in Frankfurt. The Grade 10 students from Germany will be in Toronto from June 21 to July 2. If your family is able to host for all or even a portion of their stay, it would help immensely.

Based on experience from past hosting opportunities, UTS families have really enjoyed the experience.

Please email Garth Chalmers (gchalmers@utschools.ca) if you are willing to consider hosting and he will provide further details.

UTS Summer Camp Spotlight: Changemakers

Is your student trying to influence the world, but doesn’t know how? Or maybe they’re concerned about a specific social issue, but don’t know where to start? Changemakers is our summer camp that teaches participants about how they can use their voice and influence to effect change on a local and global scale.

Perhaps your student’s interest runs more to finance and industry disruption. Developed at the Rotman School of Business and now our partner as an educational non-profit, Integrative Thinking is a problem-solving strategy that aims to help businesses meet the challenges of the 21st century.

Please email camps@utschools.ca for more information.

Ontario University Offer Deadlines
June 3

Ontario universities have until May 29 to release admission decisions to students. All students must confirm their replies on OUAC no later than June 3 or all offers of admission will be revoked. Students should respond promptly to any emails they receive from their counsellor, particularly in the lead up to this important deadline. S6 students were asked to update their university responses and destinations in Naviance, and with their counsellor. Families, we would appreciate your help in reminding them to do so.

Speaker for Parents and Guardians on Videogames June 4

UTSPA’s Wellness Committee invites you to join a much-anticipated virtual session on Tuesday, June 4 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Video gaming continues to merge into the lives of families at UTS. While gaming can offer great opportunities for fun, education and connection, it can also bring about problems. Sometimes these problems can leave families feeling disconnected, blamed and helpless. Through a one-hour, online workshop, Dale Andersen-Giberson MSW, RSW, will offer a number of responses to video gaming difficulties that he has encountered in his practice.
